The Great Sleep Saga: Surviving the 'Night Shift' and Conquering the Sandman 🌙
Hey Parents,
Let's chat about the most sought-after treasure that often eludes us parents – a good night's sleep! 😴
Have you ever spent your nights acting as a hallway receptionist on a camping mattress, or conducted symphonies of lullabies with a touch of desperation in your voice?
Well, you're not alone.
I remember when sleep became as mythical as unicorns in our household. 🦄
In a last-ditch attempt, I set up camp in the hallway, on a camping mattress, playing the role of the gatekeeper to the Land of Nod.
My mission?
To prevent our kids from waking my wife in the middle of the night. 🙅♂️
It took a little over a week of this makeshift set-up and a more rigid sleep protocol to crack the code.
Before long, the little ones were sleeping through the night, and I was promoted from Hallway Receptionist to Chief of Slumber Security! 💂♂️💤
Here's the thing though – ensuring peaceful, restorative sleep for the whole family isn't always as simple as a nocturnal reception desk.
Battle of Bedtimes: Young Kids Edition 👶
Kids sleep issues are like playing a game of whack-a-mole in a dark room; just when you think you've got one sorted, another pops up! But don't worry, here's our survival guide:
Steady Routines to the Rescue ⏰: Make bedtime as predictable as a rerun of your favourite sitcom. Keep things consistent with relaxing pre-bed rituals. The kids might not appreciate a good plot twist at bedtime.
Comfort is Key 🛏️: Ensure their rooms are as cozy as a cuddly teddy bear. However, introducing tools like white noise machines or blackout curtains should come with a game plan to eventually wean them off. We don't want them unable to sleep in natural settings as they grow older!
Tech-free Time 🚫📱: Screens before bed can leave your kids more wired than a Christmas tree. Try to power down at least an hour before sleep time.
Munching Matters 🍽️: Try to avoid giving them big meals or too much sugar close to bedtime. Unless you want to host a midnight party, of course!
Let's also talk about the critical issue of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Ensure your babies sleep on their back, keep their sleeping area clutter-free, and avoid overheating. Staying informed and vigilant is key to prevent such tragedies.
Now, you might be thinking, "Sure, but what if they resist sleep with the tenacity of a politician avoiding a straight answer?"
It's hard, but the key is to stay calm.
Easier said than done, I know.
Just remember, some nights you're the captain steering the ship, some nights you're just trying to weather the storm.
It's all a part of the parenting journey! 🎢
Don't Forget the Parent in Parenting! 👨👩👧👦
Remember, ensuring that you clock in your own sleep hours is as vital as ensuring you don't run out of nappies on a road trip with a one-year-old.
Here's why:
The Beauty of Routine ⏳: A sleep schedule is like a well-oiled machine. The more regularly you turn in and rise, the smoother your sleep cycles will be.
Get Moving 🏃♀️🏃♂️: Regular exercise might tire you out initially, but it's the secret ingredient to a peaceful sleep (yes that kind of exercise counts 😉).
Fuel for Sleep 🥦: Watch your diet, especially close to bedtime. It's tough, but try to limit the caffeine, and alcohol.
Peace Out ✌️: Create a sleep-friendly environment. We might not always have the luxury of a quiet household (I'm looking at you, squeaky toys!), but do your best to ensure your space is comfortable and consider taking turns with your partner wearing earplugs (but make sure someone can hear the kids if they need you).
If you're currently in the trenches of sleep deprivation with your little ones, we feel deeply for you.
We've been there (many times 😵💫).
Remember, you're doing an amazing job.
And while it might seem like an eternity now, this phase is temporary.
You will conquer these restless nights, and we promise, a time will come when you'll wake up shocked and delighted that you've slept a full night! 🎉
So, keep going, dear parents.
We'll be praying for you. 🙏
Just remember, This To Shall Pass.
Whether you're a seasoned Hallway Receptionist or a rookie in the Sandman negotiation team, there are peaceful nights ahead.
Here's to more laughter, less exhaustion, and the joy of waking up refreshed and ready to conquer the day! 💪

Keep the spark alive with some of our date night ideas this week 😍🔥 (Even without a babysitter!)
Staying In Date Night Idea:
- Backyard Picnic 🥐 (It’s a classic date for a reason! Complete with picnic foods, a picnic rug and fairy lights.)
- Skinny Dipping 🏊♂️ (Everyone has to do this at least once, right? Find a local nudist beach if you want to do this one legally. 😉)
- Fishing 🎣 (Borrow some fishing gear from a mate (and the location of their secret spot), sign up for a temporary licence (very affordable) and have fun with your kids! Great for kids 3+ and a good lesson in patience and reward. If you don't happen to catch anything you can always stop past the local fish and chip shop on the way home 😉)
- Shoulder Ride ☝ (Sometimes the best fun is the easiest to achieve. Whether it's a new place to walk or an old one, give your kid a fresh view! Too old for a shoulder ride? A walk down a new track can be just as exciting.)
Cheering you on!
